White Cane Safety Event
Wednesday, October 18, 2017
October is White Cane Awareness month. This observation is set aside to raise public awareness of the issues affecting the lives of the blind, including traffic laws, equal access statutes, and the Americans with Disabilities Act. Motorists in all fifty states are required to stop whenever blind pedestrians using a white cane or accompanied by a guide dog are crossing streets, driveways or other places. Violation of Florida's White Cane Law (316.1301 FS) is a moving violation, which carries a penalty of three points on the driver's license and a fine of $95.
The Florida Outreach Center for the Blind, Inc. invites you to join our White Cane Safety Event at 2:00 P.M. on Wednesday, October 18, 2017. We will gather at the Center located at 2315 S. Congress Avenue in Palm Springs, Florida, 33406. Our intention is to increase awareness of the White Cane Law and to exercise our rights as citizens to cross a public street without fearing for our lives. Posters will be displayed and fliers distributed. A proclamation, declaring October 18, as White Cane Safety Day in Palm Beach County will be read. The Police Department, and the media are expected to attend. Other interested groups are also invited to join our demonstration. We are all facing the same problems: roads and streets that are getting wider, busier and less pedestrian friendly. We hope you will join us in making our streets a safer place for pedestrians.
